Welcome to our web site! We are The St. Louis Mineral & Gem Society, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. The "Gateway to the West" is also close to lots of interesting geology! Geodes, crystals, archeological super-sites, minerals, and fossils (some around 2 billion years old!) are day trips away from our front door. We meet at Washington University, near Forest Park, and take advantage of the experts who teach there. From an analysis of local flooding to a guided tour of the Mars Observers' trips on Mars, speakers share their knowledge with us. These pages will give you a glimpse of who we are and what we are about.
Come and join us on First Fridays from September through May for a great time learning, fellowshipping, and supporting educational outreach programs across the area. Learn about us here and we look forward to meeting you soon! (And the snacks are just as outstanding as the programs!) Visitors are always welcome!
No rockhound is ever truly happy until they have enough rocks stored around the house to hold it down in the event of a tornado! We have monthly field trips; most of the time we are collecting, but sometimes we do go just to learn! From minerals to fossils to geodes to quartz crystals (in Arkansas!), you can join us stooped over having fun. Kids are welcome most of the time too!
Pebble Pups, our group for kids twelve and under, meets next-door to the main meeting for hands-on learning while the rest of us slog through the treasurer's report and such. They then re-join us for snacks and the program. Each year at our November annual show, the Pebble Pups work to put together a display case of the specimens they have accrued over the past year.
Every November The St. Louis Mineral & Gem Society sponsors a Mineral, Gem, & Fossil Show and Sale. In addition to seeing hundreds of specimens and free "Rock Collection Starter Kits" for the kids, members put together display cases from their own collections. A great family outing!
