About Us

Who We Are

The St. Louis Mineral & Gem Society is a nonprofit club. Members consist of mostly amateurs, interested in:

  • Rocks
  • Minerals
  • Fossils
  • Gems
  • Lapidary (Stone Polishing)
  • Earth Sciences

The club was founded in 1951 to help promote our hobby and knowledge of the earth.  Our club meets once a month from September through May, usually on the first Friday of the Month.  (The September meeting is the first Friday after Labor Day.)  Each meeting includes a program related to the hobby, door prizes and refreshments.  Once or twice a year we have an auction.

Club meeting

Club meetings begin at 7:30 PM in Room 203 of Scott Rudolph Hall (formerly the Earth & Planetary Science Building) on the Danforth Campus of Washington University in University City.  From Forsyth Boulevard, turn north onto Hoyt Drive, or from Forest Park Parkway, turn south onto Hoyt.  Hoyt Drive runs parallel to Skinker Blvd, between Forsyth Blvd and Forest Park Parkway (Millbrook Blvd).

There is a detailed interactive map at the bottom of this page.

Pebble Pups, the rock club for kids, gets together for some hands on activities during a portion of each regular club meeting.

Field trips are scheduled during most of the months between September and June.

We host an annual show in early November.

In June we have a picnic at one of the St. Louis area parks.  The festivities include a rock auction, plenty of good food, bingo and the sharing of friendship.

Rock Lore

Our club's newsletter is called "Rock Lore".

Have Rocks, Will Travel!

Several members of the Society volunteer to speak to schools, scouts, and other groups about rocks, minerals or earth science.  To request a presentation or ask for more information, please send an email to HaveRocksWillTravel@StLRockClub.com

Science Fair Awards

Society members serve as judges for Earth Science related projects in the St. Louis Regional Science Fair.  We provide prizes for the best three  Earth Science projects.

Club Affiliations

The St. Louis Mineral & Gem Society is affiliated with The American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS) and the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies (MWF).

The club also participates in events sponsored by the Greater St. Louis Association of Earth Science Clubs.  These activities include an annual show, a swap at the Missouri Mines State Park and joint field trips
